アクセント
1.アクセントとは
アクセントとは、単語を発音するときの音の高さや強さの形のことです。
言語によって、アクセントの仕組みは大きく異なります。
Accent is the pattern of pitch or force used when a word is pronounced.
How accent works differs greatly from language to language.
中国語
漢字1文字ごとに音の上がり下がり(声調)があります。
Every single character has its own rise and fall of pitch (a tone).
例
英語
単語の中で、どこを強く発音するか(強弱アクセント)が決まっています。
Which part of a word is said with more force is fixed (a stress accent).
例
韓国語
基本的に、単語ごとの固有のアクセントはありません。
As a rule, individual words do not carry an accent of their own.
Japanese accent is built on pitch — high versus low — and what matters is the place where the pitch falls sharply (the pitch drop).
In other words, when you listen for Japanese accent, the shortcut to improvement is not hunting for the highest sound, but learning to hear where the drop comes.
Let's look at a real word. In 「にほん」 (Japan), the pitch falls sharply as you move from 「ほ」 to 「ん」. The drop is therefore right after 「ほ」.
例
では、「にほんじん (日本人)」はどうでしょうか。この場合は、先ほどとは場所が変わり、「じ」の直後で音が急激に下がります。そのため、音の下がり目は「じ」の直後にあります。
Now, what about 「にほんじん」 (Japanese person)? Here the position shifts: the pitch falls sharply right after 「じ」, so the drop is immediately after 「じ」.
例
音が急激に下がる直前の高い音のことを、アクセント核と呼びます。
The high sound just before the sharp fall is called the accent nucleus.
A word's accent can be shown visually with marks.
There are several kinds of marks. The 『日本語発音アクセント新辞典』 published by NHK (the Japan Broadcasting Corporation) currently uses a notation that marks the pitch drop.
Another way is to show the drop position with a number, such as 「①」 (falls after the first mora) or 「③」 (falls after the third character). It shows the position at a glance, but you rarely see it outside Chinese dictionaries.
4.基本ルール
日本語のアクセントを理解する上で大事なルールは、単語の1音目と、2音目は、同じ高さにならないということです。
つまり、1音目が「高い」とき、2音目は必ず「低い」です。また1音目が「低い」とき、2音目は必ず「高い」です。
The key rule for understanding Japanese accent is that the first and second mora of a word never have the same pitch.
In other words, when the first mora is high, the second is always low; when the first is low, the second is always high.
1音目が「高」、2音目が「低」
例
1音目が「低」、2音目が「高」
例
このように、短い単語でも長い単語でも、1音目と2音目の高さは必ず変わります。
この基本ルールをもとにして、次のアクセントのパターンを考えていきましょう。
As you can see, whether the word is short or long, the pitch of the first and second mora always changes.
With this basic rule in mind, let's move on to the accent patterns.
5.アクセントの4つの型
日本語のアクセントのパターンは、大きく分けると、途中で音が下がらない平板型(へいばんがた)と、途中で音が下がる3つの起伏型(きふくがた)があります。
Broadly speaking, Japanese accent patterns fall into the flat type, where the pitch never drops partway, and three rising-falling types, where it does.
平板型
特徴: 音の下がり目がありません。
発音のコツ: 最初の1音目を低く発音し、2音目からは最後までずっと高いまま、平らに進みます。後ろに「が」や「を」などの助詞がついても、音は下がりません。
Feature: there is no pitch drop at all.
Tip: say the first mora low, then stay high and flat from the second mora to the end. Even when a particle such as 「が」 or 「を」 follows, the pitch does not drop.
例
頭高型
特徴: 1音目の直後に下がり目があります。
発音のコツ: 1音目を高く発音し、2音目へ行くときに急激に音を下げます。
特に頭高型は、後ろの文字にいくほど少しずつ音を下げていくと綺麗に聞こえます。
Feature: the drop comes right after the first mora.
Tip: say the first mora high, then drop the pitch sharply as you move to the second.
With the head-high type in particular, letting the pitch fall a little further toward the later characters sounds cleaner.
例
標準語の場合は、一度下がった音が同じ単語の中で再び上がることは基本的にありません(一部の方言にはあります)。
In standard Japanese, once the pitch has fallen it basically does not rise again within the same word (some dialects do allow it).
中高型
特徴: 2音目より後ろに、下がり目があります。ただし、最後の仮名の直後に音の下がり目はありません。
発音のコツ: 1音目を低く発音し、2音目で音を高く上げた後、単語の真ん中の文字の直後で急激に音を下げます。
Feature: the drop comes somewhere after the second mora — but never right after the last kana.
Tip: say the first mora low, raise the pitch on the second, then drop it sharply right after a character in the middle of the word.
例
尾高型
特徴: 最後の音の直後に下がり目があります。
発音のコツ: 1音目を低く、2音目から最後の文字まで高く平らに発音します。
単語だけで考えるなら平板型と同じですが、単語の後ろに助詞(が、を など)をつけた時、
その助詞の音が低くなります。
Feature: the drop comes right after the last mora.
Tip: say the first mora low, then keep everything from the second mora to the last character high and flat.
Taken on its own the word sounds just like the flat type, but when a particle (が, を, etc.) follows,
that particle is said low.
例
基本的に、音の下がり目は特殊拍(っ、ー、ん)の直後にはありません。もし発音しづらい単語がある時、特殊拍の直後で音を下げようとしていないか確認してみてください。
As a rule, the pitch drop never comes immediately after a special mora (っ, ー, ん). If a word feels hard to say, check whether you are trying to drop the pitch right after a special mora.

6.アクセントの変化
複合語
2つ以上の単語が合体して1つの新しい言葉(複合語)になると、もともとのアクセントが変わることがあります。
When two or more words join into a single new word (a compound word), the original accent can change.
例
ただし、「ストレス解消」や「暴飲暴食(四字熟語)」などのように、前後の言葉の結びつきが弱い場合は、もとの単語のアクセントのまま続けて読みます。
However, when the two parts are only loosely joined — as in 「ストレス解消」 (stress relief) or 「暴飲暴食」 (a four-character compound) — each word keeps its original accent as you read straight on.
例
どんな複合語のときにアクセントが変わるのかは、はっきりとしたルールはありません。そのため、複合語が新しいアクセントになっているかどうか分からないときは、まずは辞書などで調べて、そのまま覚えていくのがおすすめです。
There is no clear-cut rule for which compound words change their accent. So when you are unsure whether a compound has taken on a new accent, it is best to look it up in a dictionary and memorize it as it is.
平板化現象
辞書に載っているアクセントだけが、絶対に正しいとは限りません。最近の日本語では、もともと途中で音が下がっていた言葉(起伏型)が、下がらない形(平板型)で発音されることが増えています。これを平板化現象と呼びます。
The accent listed in a dictionary is not always the only correct one. In recent Japanese, words that used to drop in pitch partway (rising-falling types) are increasingly pronounced without the drop (flat type). This is called the flattening trend.
例
どちらで発音しても、現代の日本では違和感はありません。 なぜ平板化するのかといえば、音を途中で下げない(平板型)ほうが、口の筋肉を使わず、楽に話せるからだと考えられます。
日本語のアクセントは生き物のように日々変化しています。もし周りの日本人が辞書と違うアクセントで話しているなら、それは「今のリアルな日本語」かもしれません。
Either pronunciation sounds perfectly natural in Japan today. As for why flattening happens, it is thought that not dropping the pitch partway (the flat type) uses fewer mouth muscles and is simply easier to say.
Japanese accent changes day by day, like a living thing. If the Japanese people around you speak with an accent different from the dictionary, that may well be 「real, present-day Japanese」.
7.練習
同じ読み方でも、アクセントによって意味が変わる言葉に注目してみましょう。
まずは音の下がり目を考えてから、声に出して読んでみてください。
Let's look at words that are read the same but change meaning depending on the accent.
First work out where the pitch drops, then read them aloud.

Japanese has a pitch accent: what matters is not how strong a sound is, but how high it is.
・The pitch drop is what counts: look for the place where the pitch falls sharply.
・The basic rule of accent: the first and second characters of a word always differ in pitch. (low→high, high→low)
・There are four main accent types: the flat type and three rising-falling types (head-high, middle-high, tail-high).
・Compounds and modern accent: watch out for compound words. Today, flattening of accent is also spreading.
