Description

　この文型は、ある状況や行動を選ぶよりも、別の選択肢の方が良いという話し手の感情や意見を表す表現です。通常、話し手が否定的に感じている選択肢に対して使われます。 This sentence pattern expresses the speaker’s feelings or opinion that, instead of choosing a certain situation or action, another option would be better. It is usually used when the speaker feels negatively about a particular option.

Examples

そんな店みせで食事しょくじをするくらいなら、家いえで食たべた方ほうがいい。If you’re going to eat at such a restaurant, you’d be better off eating at home.

彼かれに謝あやまるぐらいなら、仕事しごとを辞やめた方ほうがましだ。If I have to apologize to him, I’d rather quit my job.

雨あめの中なかで待まつくらいなら、電車でんしゃで行いった方ほうが速はやい。It would be quicker to take the train than to wait in the rain.

彼かれと結婚けっこんするぐらいなら、一人ひとりで生いきていった方ほうがいい。If I have to marry him, I’d rather live alone.
