Description

　この文型は、他に選択肢や方法がなく、必然的にその行動を取るしかないことを表す表現です。話し手が困惑や諦めを含む心情を伴って使用することが多いです。 This sentence pattern expresses that there are no other choices or methods, and the only action that can be taken is the one in question. It is often used with emotions such as confusion or resignation.

Examples

この仕事しごとを終おわらせるには、徹夜てつやするほかない。To finish this work, there is no choice but to stay up all night.

電車でんしゃが止とまっているので、歩あるいて帰かえるよりほかない。Since the train has stopped, there’s no other choice but to walk home.
