母音の無声化
1.無声化とは
無声化とは、主に母音iとuが、声帯の振動を失って発音される音声現象です。
母音の調音位置(舌や唇の形)は保たれたまま、声帯が振動しないため、母音としての響きが非常に弱くなったり、ほとんど聞こえなくなったりします。(ただし、完全に音がなくなるわけではありません)
この無声化は、日本語の自然なリズムやテンポを生み出す重要な特徴の一つです。
Devoicing is a phonetic phenomenon in which mainly the vowels [i] and [u] are pronounced without vibration of the vocal cords.
The articulation of the vowel (the shape of the tongue and lips) is kept, but because the vocal cords do not vibrate, its resonance as a vowel becomes very weak or almost inaudible. (It does not, however, disappear completely.)
This devoicing is one of the important features that create the natural rhythm and tempo of Japanese.
無声化の概念が無い方言もあります。例えば関西弁ではほとんど無声化せず、基本は全ての母音をしっかり発音します。
Some dialects have no concept of devoicing. In the Kansai dialect, for example, devoicing hardly occurs and basically every vowel is pronounced fully.
アナウンサーや声優さんは無声化をしっかり意識して発音することが多いですが、日常会話では無声化する母音は、曖昧な発音になっていることが多いです。
Announcers and voice actors usually pronounce with devoicing firmly in mind, but in everyday conversation the vowels that would be devoiced are often pronounced vaguely.
2.無声音と有声音
日本語の音は、すべて無声音か有声音に分けられます。喉に手を当てたとき、振動しない音が無声音、振動する音が有声音です。
無声音では、声門(声帯のすきま)を有声音より大きく開いて発音します。そのため、肺からの呼気が声帯を通過しても、声帯は振動しません。
日本語の無声音は、k、s、t、h、pの5つです。それ以外の子音と、母音「あ・い・う・え・お」は、有声音です。
Every sound in Japanese is either voiceless or voiced. Put your hand on your throat: the sounds that do not vibrate are voiceless, and the ones that do are voiced.
For voiceless sounds, the glottis (the gap between the vocal cords) is opened wider than for voiced sounds. As a result, the air from the lungs passes through without making the vocal cords vibrate.
Japanese has five voiceless consonants: [k], [s], [t], [h] and [p]. All other consonants, and the vowels 「あ・い・う・え・お」, are voiced.
3.無声化が起こる条件
無声化が起こるのは、大きく分けて次の2つの場合です。
Devoicing occurs in broadly two situations.
❶ 母音iとuが無声子音に挟まれたとき
母音iとuが、前後を無声子音k、s、t、h、pに挟まれると、無声化します。
When the vowels [i] and [u] are flanked by the voiceless consonants [k], [s], [t], [h] or [p], they are devoiced.
例
基本のルールでは、無声化するのは母音iとuですが、他の母音も場合によっては、無声化に近い発音になることがあります。例えば日常会話で「お母さん」と言う時、 aをはっきり発音しないことも多いです。口をあまり大きく開けないで発音するとき、母音は無声化しやすくなります。
The basic rule is that [i] and [u] are the vowels that get devoiced, but other vowels can also come close to devoicing in some cases. For example, when saying 「お母さん」 in everyday conversation, the [a] is often not pronounced clearly. Vowels are more easily devoiced when you do not open your mouth very wide.
「靴下」や「きつつき」のように無声子音が連続しているときは、自分が読みやすいように無声化します。例えば、「靴下」の場合、「く」のu と「し」のiを無声化し、「つ」のuを有声音のまま発音すると読みやすいかもしれません。
When voiceless consonants come one after another, as in 「靴下」 or 「きつつき」, devoice whichever vowels make it easiest for you to say. With 「靴下」, for example, devoicing the [u] of 「く」 and the [i] of 「し」 while keeping the [u] of 「つ」 voiced may be easier to pronounce.
例
❷ 文末の「です」「ます」
基本的に、文末の「です」「ます」の「す」の母音uは、無声化します。
さらに「ですか?」「ますか?」「ですし、」「ますし、」のように後ろに無声子音が続く場合も、「す」の母音は無声化します。(「ですが」「ますが」のように後ろに有声子音が続くときは、無声化しません)
As a rule, the [u] in the 「す」 of sentence-final 「です」 and 「ます」 is devoiced.
It is devoiced as well when a voiceless consonant follows, as in 「ですか?」, 「ますか?」, 「ですし、」 or 「ますし、」. (When a voiced consonant follows, as in 「ですが」 or 「ますが」, it is not devoiced.)
例
4.発音の仕方
母音を無声化しても、発音するときの口の形は母音iとuと同じです。
綺麗に発音するためのコツは、子音の息を強めに出すことです。無声子音の間の母音が長音の場合も、無声化します。
Even when a vowel is devoiced, the shape of your mouth is the same as for the vowels [i] and [u].
The key to a clean pronunciation is to push the breath of the consonant a little harder. A long vowel between voiceless consonants is devoiced too.
