イントネーション

1.イントネーションとは

 イントネーションとは、文全体での音の高さの変化のことです。相手に、自分の言いたいことを伝える上でとても大切です。
 日本語の文のイントネーションは、主に以下の3つの要素が組み合わさって決まります。
  単語のアクセント
  強調(特に言いたい部分)
  発話の意図(質問同意感嘆など)

Intonation is the change in pitch across a whole sentence. It matters a great deal in getting across what you want to say.
The intonation of a Japanese sentence is decided mainly by the following three elements working together.
❶ The accent of each word
❷ Emphasis (the part you especially want to say)
❸ The intent of the utterance (a question, agreement, exclamation and so on)

2.単語のアクセントと「山」

 具体的に次の文章で考えてみましょう。
 「わたしは日本が好きです。旅行なら福岡と北海道がお勧めです。皆さんはどうですか?」

Let's work through it with the following passage.
「I like Japan. For travel, I recommend Fukuoka and Hokkaido. How about you?」

1文目:「わたしは日本が好きです」

 この文で主要な内容は「わたし」「日本」「好き」です。
 それぞれを含んだ意味のまとまりを作ると、「わたしは / 日本が / 好きです」と3つに分かれます。まとまりを区切るところは、「えー」とか「うーん」など意味のない言葉(フィラー)を入れても不自然ではない部分が目安になります。文節の考え方と大体同じです。

The key content of this sentence is 「わたし」, 「日本」 and 「好き」.
Grouping each of them into a meaningful chunk gives three parts: 「わたしは / 日本が / 好きです」. A good guide for where the chunks divide is a place where you could insert a meaningless filler such as 「えー」 or 「うーん」 without sounding odd. It is roughly the same idea as a phrase.

 次に、まとまりごとに単語のアクセントをふまえて、音の高低のイメージ線を描いてみます。(小さな山)

Next, for each chunk, draw an imaginary pitch line based on the accent of the words. (the small hills)

「わたしは」のまとまりには山の下がる終わりがありませんが、これも山の一つだと考えてください。一つのまとまりの中には、形は違っても山が必ず一つあります。

The chunk 「わたしは」 has no falling end to its hill, but please regard it as a hill all the same. Every chunk contains exactly one hill, even if the shape differs.

 最後に、全体の山を繋いで一本の線にしてみましょう。(大きな山)

Finally, join all the hills into a single line. (the big hill)

発音

小さい山大きい山
わたしは日本にほんきです。I like Japan.

発音の注意:大きい山ができていないと、ロボットみたいに聞こえます。

A note on pronunciation: without the big hill, you sound like a robot.

良くない例

小さい山大きい山
わたしは日本にほんきです。I like Japan.

2文目:「旅行なら福岡と北海道がお勧めです」

 主要な内容は「旅行」「福岡」「北海道」「お勧め」です。
 まとまりの中で単語のアクセントを調べてから、イントネーションの山を描き、最後に全体を繋ぎます。

 The key content is 「旅行」, 「福岡」, 「北海道」 and 「お勧め」.
Check the accent of the words within each chunk, draw the intonation hills, then join them all together at the end.

発音

りょ小さい山大きい山
旅行りょこうなら福岡ふくおか北海道ほっかいどうがおすすめです。For travel, I recommend Fukuoka and Hokkaido.

3文目:「皆さんはどうですか?」

 主要な内容は「皆さん」「どう」です。
 まとまりの中で単語のアクセントを調べてから、イントネーションの山を描き、最後に全体を繋ぎますが、基本的に疑問文では文末の音を上げます

The key content is 「皆さん」 and 「どう」.
Check the accent within each chunk, draw the intonation hills and join them as before — but in a question, the pitch at the end of the sentence basically rises.

発音

小さい山大きい山
みなさんはどうですか?How about you all?

文の種類とイントネーション

 日本語の文には「平叙文」「疑問文」「命令文」「感動文」などがあります。
 平叙文は、文頭から文末に向かって少しずつ音が下がります。
 疑問文は、文末の音を上げます。
 命令文は、命令や禁止などを表す言葉の音が特に高くなります。
 感動文は、感動を示す言葉で音が高くなります。

Japanese sentences include declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory sentences.
・In a declarative sentence, the pitch falls little by little from the beginning toward the end.
・In an interrogative sentence, the pitch rises at the end.
・In an imperative sentence, the words expressing the command or prohibition become especially high.
・In an exclamatory sentence, the pitch rises on the word that shows the emotion.

【平叙文】
掃除そうじをします。I will clean.
【疑問文】
掃除そうじをしますか?Will you clean?
【命令文】
掃除そうじをしろ!Clean it up!
【感動文】
掃除そうじをするなんて!Cleaning, of all things!

3.強調

 日本語は、音の高低の差によって強調をしたいことを伝えます。
 普通、強く言いたい部分は、高い音で発音します。つまり、その部分の山の高さは高くなります。音のボリュームや強弱よりも大事な要素です。

Japanese conveys what you want to emphasize through differences in pitch.
Normally the part you want to stress is pronounced at a high pitch — in other words, the hill over that part becomes taller. This matters more than volume or force.

わたしは日本にほんきです。
(「わたし」を強調)I like Japan.
わたしは日本にほんきです。
(「日本」を強調)I like Japan.
わたしは日本にほんきです。
(「好き」を強調)I like Japan.

発音の注意:高い山が多すぎると、どこを強調しているのか分かりにくく、うるさく聞こえます。

A note on pronunciation: too many tall hills make it hard to tell what is being emphasized, and it sounds noisy.

良くない例

わたしは日本にほんきです。I like Japan.

強調の技術

 言葉を強調する技術は、音を高くするだけではありません。他にも、音を低くしたり、言葉の前後に間をとったり、一部だけスピードを落とす、などいろいろな方法があります。

Raising the pitch is not the only technique for emphasizing a word. You can also lower the pitch, leave a pause before and after the word, or slow down just that part — there are many methods.

4.発話の意図

 言葉は同じでも、イントネーション次第で発話の意図、および相手が感じる印象が変わります。

Even with the same words, the intent of the utterance — and the impression the listener gets — changes with the intonation.

例1:いいよ

A:これ、ててくれる?A: Can you throw this away?B:いいよ(了解)B: Sure! (agreement)A:ありがと。A: Thanks.

例3:真面目じゃない

A:あのひと、ちょっとこわいね。A: That person is a bit scary.B:でも、真面目まじめじゃない(確認)B: But he's serious, isn't he? (confirmation)A:たしかにね。A: True.
