撥音

1.撥音とは

　「ん」・「ン」は五十音の中でも少し特殊な音で、撥音とも言います。
　他の仮名と違って母音を含まず、鼻から息が抜ける鼻音として発音されます。長さは１拍あります。

　「ん」 and 「ン」 are somewhat special among the fifty sounds; they are called the syllabic nasal.
　Unlike other kana they contain no vowel, and are pronounced as a nasal, with the breath escaping through the nose. They are one mora long.

2.撥音の発音

　日本語の「ん」には８種類以上の発音があると言われています。
　日本人は、「ん」の発音の仕方を一つ一つ勉強しませんが、自然に発音方法を切り替えることができます。ですが日本語を第二言語として勉強する方にとっては、簡単なルールがある方が分かりやすいと思います。
　そこで、なるべくルールが少なくなるように「ん」の後に続く子音によって、鼻音を出す強さを３つのレベルに分けました。

　Japanese 「ん」 is said to have eight or more different pronunciations.
　Japanese speakers never learn them one by one, yet they switch between them naturally. For those learning Japanese as a second language, though, a simple set of rules is easier to follow.
　So, keeping the rules to a minimum, we have divided the strength of the nasal into three levels according to the consonant that follows 「ん」.

レベル１（弱い鼻音）

　「ん」の直後に、息の流れを狭くしない音(母音・y・w・sなど)が続くときです。
　鼻と口から同時に音を出します。３つの中で一番鼻音が弱いです。「ん」を発音するとき、舌は口の中のどこにも接しません。

　This is when 「ん」 is followed by a sound that does not narrow the airflow (a vowel, y, w, s and so on).
　The sound comes out through the nose and the mouth at the same time. This is the weakest nasal of the three. While pronouncing 「ん」, the tongue touches nowhere in the mouth.

レベル２（鼻だけから出す）

　「ん」の直後に、口の中のどこかを一度狭くして出す音(k・t・n・m・r・g・d・bなど)が続くときです。
　鼻からのみ音を出します。息の通り道が一瞬狭くなったり、息が止まったりするため、ほぼ完全な鼻音になります。

　This is when 「ん」 is followed by a sound made by narrowing somewhere in the mouth (k, t, n, m, r, g, d, b and so on).
　The sound comes out through the nose only. Because the airway narrows for a moment or the breath stops, it becomes an almost completely nasal sound.

「ん」が鼻音なので、その直後に他の鼻音(n・mなど)がくると、「ん」を一拍確保するのが難しい人がいます。口から息が漏れていると、「ん」が短くなりやすいので、口から息が出ていないか確認してみてください。

　Since 「ん」 is itself a nasal, some people find it hard to hold a full mora when another nasal (n, m and so on) comes right after. If breath leaks out of the mouth, 「ん」 easily becomes short, so check that no air is escaping through your mouth.

レベル３（語末の強い鼻音）

　単語や文章の最後が「ん」で終わる時です。
　鼻からのみ音を出しますが、レベル２よりも強く、はっきりと発音します。「ん」を発音するとき、舌は口の中のどこにも接しません。

　This is when a word or a sentence ends with 「ん」.
　The sound comes out through the nose only, but more strongly and clearly than in Level 2. While pronouncing 「ん」, the tongue touches nowhere in the mouth.

　・Level 3: 「ん」 at the very end → let the breath out through the nose only, a little stronger than Level 2. The tongue touches nowhere in the mouth.
