拍とリズム
1.拍
日本語には、言葉を一定の長さの単位で刻んでいく独特のリズムがあります。
日本語は、仮名1文字の長さ(拍/モーラ)をほぼ同じ長さで読むことが多いです。
Japanese has a distinctive rhythm that marks words off in units of equal length.
In Japanese, the length of one kana (a mora) is usually read as roughly the same length throughout.
・仮名1文字は、1拍です。
・促音(っ)・長音(ー)・撥音(ん)は、それぞれ1拍として数えます。
・拗音は、その前の仮名と合わせて1拍と数えます。(例:「きゃ」=1拍、「びょ」=1拍)
・One kana = one mora.
・The geminate consonant (っ), the long vowel (ー) and the syllabic nasal (ん) each count as one mora.
・A contracted sound counts as one mora together with the kana before it. (e.g. 「きゃ」=1 mora, 「びょ」=1 mora)

2.リズム
日本語を1拍ずつ一定に読むと、ロボットのようになってしまいます。リズムをもっと自然にするためには、1拍より大きい「まとまり」で発音します。
仮名を「まとまり」に分けるための手順は以下のとおりです。
Reading Japanese one mora at a time at an even pace makes you sound like a robot. To make the rhythm more natural, pronounce it in chunks larger than a single mora.
The steps for dividing kana into chunks are as follows.

3.音節
日本語の発音上の「まとまり」の分け方と音節は似ていますが、少し違います。音節(シラブル)とは、母音を中心にできる発音のまとまりです。
1つの音節には、必ず1つの母音があります。子音だけでは音節になりません。
The way Japanese is divided into chunks for pronunciation resembles syllables, but is a little different. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation built around a vowel.
Every syllable contains exactly one vowel. Consonants alone do not make a syllable.
例
「チョコレート」の母音は4つあるので、4音節となりますが、日本語の「まとまり」で考えると、「チョコ・レー・ト」になります。ですのでこの場合は、音節読みすると不自然になります。
「チョコレート」 has four vowels, so it is four syllables, but in terms of Japanese chunks it becomes 「チョコ・レー・ト」. Reading it by syllables therefore sounds unnatural here.
4.練習
1拍より大きい「まとまり」に分けて、リズムよく読んでみましょう。
Divide the words into chunks larger than one mora and read them with good rhythm.

5.まとめ
・拍の数え方:仮名1文字=1拍、特殊拍(促音・長音・撥音)=1拍、拗音(きゃ、びょなど)=1拍
・リズム:1拍より大きいまとまりを作って読む。
・Counting moras: one kana=1 mora; a special mora (geminate consonant, long vowel, syllabic nasal)=1 mora; a contracted sound (きゃ, びょ…)=1 mora.
・Rhythm: read by forming chunks larger than a single mora.
