Description

　「つつ」は、同時に進行する動作や対立する行動を表す接続助詞です。「〜つつも」の形では、ある行動をしながらも、それに反する心情や別の行動が存在することを示します。書き言葉としてよく使われます。「つつ」is a conjunction used to express two simultaneous actions or contradictory actions. In the form of「〜つつも」, it indicates that while one action is happening, there are contrary feelings or actions taking place. It is often used in written language.

Examples

彼女かのじょは将来しょうらいを考かんがえつつ、現在げんざいの仕事しごとに専念せんねんしている。She is focusing on her current job while thinking about her future.

健康けんこうに悪わるいと知しりつつも、彼かれはタバコをやめられない。Even though he knows it’s bad for his health, he can’t quit smoking.

危険きけんだと知しりつつ、彼かれはその山やまに登のぼった。Knowing it was dangerous, he climbed the mountain.

彼女かのじょは謝あやまらなければと思おもいつつも、なかなか言いい出だせなかった。Although she thought she should apologize, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.

彼かれはやるべきことを知しりつつ、すぐに行動こうどうに移うつせない。He knows what he needs to do, but he can't act right away.
